Charlotte Street Foundation identifies the needs and fuels the evolution of an ever-changing multidisciplinary arts ecosystem, acting as its primary provocateur. We cultivate the contemporary, the exceptional, and the unexpected in the practice of artists working in and engaging with the Kansas City Art Community
Joshua Williams founded the group Shades of Jade. Shades of Jade is comprised of some of the most capable jazz musicians in the Kansas City area. Members of the group push the envelope on the definition of what jazz music actually is. Shades of Jade blend the energy and feel of R&B music of the 90s, hip-hop, hard-bop, soul, and funk with the traditional Kansas City roots of Jazz from the 40s to the late 60s. The Quartet consists of Joshua Williams (Semi-Finalist 2010 National Jazz Trumpet Competition) on trumpet, Perry Holliday II (Drummer), Desmond Mason (Keyboardist), Dominique Sanders (Member of Project H, and Groove 101) on bass, and Linnaia McKenzie.
Williams writes: “Throughout the years, jazz has almost become a diluted art that, although it still functions as a western influence in music today, is still recognized as an outdated complex type of music that you either understand or don’t. Shades of Jade wants to change that negative stigmatism of the music and continue to thrust it back into the mainstream of what we listen to today.”
