CHARLOTTE STREET FOUNDATION STUDIO RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Charlotte Street Foundation identifies the needs and fuels the evolution of an ever-changing multidisciplinary arts ecosystem, acting as its primary provocateur. We cultivate the contemporary, the exceptional, and the unexpected in the practice of artists working in and engaging with the Kansas City Art Community

Noël Morical

Noël Morical recently moved to Kansas City from Chicago in 2016. Morical completed her BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2011. Her artistic practice is founded on utilizing color and repetition to formulate and construct objects, garments, and installations through curiosity and concept. Working with a richly colored palette of paracord, Morical creates complex hanging sculptures through the process of macramé. Re-contextualizing a familiar, contemporary material and employing a centuries old weaving technique, she produces objects that relate to the practical and domestic (plant hangers, apparel) but stand as sovereign, otherworldly objects. Unabashedly romantic and personal, each sculpture is a response to the manifested situations in her life. For the artist, hers is a meditative practice. She creates from her lived experience, while addressing nostalgia and the possibilities of ecstasy through escape.

“I find myself adapting, manipulating, and re-contextualizing craft techniques, such as macramé, as a mode of meditation and also as a way to demonstrate the value of technique in a modern context, pushing notions of what sculpture can be.”
