Charlotte Street Foundation identifies the needs and fuels the evolution of an ever-changing multidisciplinary arts ecosystem, acting as its primary provocateur. We cultivate the contemporary, the exceptional, and the unexpected in the practice of artists working in and engaging with the Kansas City Art Community
I write creative nonfiction – vignettes, lyric essays, confessionals – though I don’t always (or even usually) tell the truth. I am intrigued at how memory helps and hinders me in being able to share meaning when being honest with myself may have very little to do with being honest with another person. My writing explores the ways truth changes as it shifts from being private to shared: how a memory is altered when it becomes a story, what happens to a fantasy when it is realized, how we construct truth to create meaning for ourselves and then reconstruct it to hopefully share that meaning with someone else. By being explicit about the manipulations, hyperboles, desaturations, withholdings, constructions and destructions that I make upon my work, I show what eludes me and how I’m aware of eluding others.
