Charlotte Street Foundation identifies the needs and fuels the evolution of an ever-changing multidisciplinary arts ecosystem, acting as its primary provocateur. We cultivate the contemporary, the exceptional, and the unexpected in the practice of artists working in and engaging with the Kansas City Art Community
In collaboration with Phoenix Family Housing, NDo has launched an arts program within Phoenix’s regularly scheduled programming to bolster the thriving literacy program that currently exists in the center. After-school, most residents between the ages of 6 and 15 use their time in the community center to work on homework, reading and writing – today we spent time getting to know each other as well as test the waters of portraiture.
The students challenged their own ideas of what art is and how we view successful works of art. After reminding the students that as children, they are naturally fearless and unique, they eagerly scribbled away on their first attempts at blind-contour self-portraits.
Images below show a few residents working on their self-portraits.
This collaboration with Phoenix will be ongoing and will feature other Charlotte Street Foundation Artists-in-Residence.
